2,391. 1,399. Location: BE. Posted July 24, 2021. A few years back we made 3 MoM's. Two that can handle 20" mirror and a third one capable of grinding a 10" mirror. We built the two larger machines in my workshop. They're standing side by side and together with my best friend Marc we grinded lots of mirrors with it.

Basically there are two types of grinding/polishing machine. The 'traditional' type which involves the mirror rotating at a relatively slow speed, a few rpm for a big mirror (16-20 inches) with the tool moving across the mirror, from side to side, at a higher rpm depending on the size of the mirror and/or tool.

Building a fixed post mirror grinding machine
I made the overarm from 1.25" steel tube, cut and fitted to size. Butt-welded, cleaned up with a grinder, painted and trial fit. It seems too low, but I will build sandwiched plywood layers, glued together and put everything up on that. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Making a 25 inch F2.6 mirror
Questions answered. Yes, a 25 inch [0.64cm] F2.6 that is half-inch [13mm] thick can be made by an amateur telescope maker. The greatest challenge by far is the extreme amount of parabolization required. Astigmatism and good mirror cell support are solvable issues.

This tool will be used to create a concave surface on the glass blank. Cover the glass with a plastic film. Make a cardboard cylinder around the glass and pour the plaster inside. Let it dry and remove the cardboard. Carefully separate the glass and file off the burs on the edge.
