RM 2D8M6PN – An old engraving of a how a mine safety cage in the 1800s worked. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The mine safety cage was developed by Pierre-Joseph Fontaine (1810-1877) in 1849. This cage contains tubs of the mined coal being lifted up the shaft to the surface.
